Release Date: 2011-03-23

Leighton Holdings subsidiary John Holland has been awarded a A$150 million (US$151.6 million) sub-contract for the construction of marine offloading facilities on Curtis Island for the Gladstone liquefied natural gas (GLNG) development in Queensland, Australia.
The contract was awarded by Bechtel Australia which holds the engineering, procurement and construction contract for the project.

Under the sub-contract John Holland will design and construct a new ferry berth, a roll on – roll off berth, a loading berth and a bulk aggregate unloading berth.

John Holland said the scope of the work included engineering, design, procurement, supply, fabrication, transportation, erection and installation works necessary to complete the new marine facilities.

Executive manager of John Holland’s energy & resources business, Brendan Petersen, said the marine offloading facilities were an integral part of the GLNG project.

“The timely completion of this facility is critical to the overall success of the GLNG project,” he said.

“We are proud to be entrusted to deliver this important component as it highlights our capability to undertake complex and critical infrastructure in the energy resources sector.”

The award comes on the back of the company’s recent front-end engineering and design contract win for Woodside Petroleum’s Browse LNG development off Western Australia.

John Holland said construction the new marine facilities for the GLNG project would begin immediately and expected for work to be completed next year.

Santos and its joint venture partners made a final investment decision to proceed with the US$16 billion GLNG project in January.

GLNG will pipe about 362 billion cubic feet of coalbed methane every year from the gas fields in eastern Queensland to the port of Gladstone, where it will be liquefied and exported.

Malaysia’s Petronas and South Korea’s Kogas have signed LNG offtake agreements for about 444.6 million cubic feet of gas per day each. LNG exports are expected to commence in 2015.

The GLNG partners are Santos with 30%, Petronas with 27.5%, French player Total with 27.5% and Kogas on 15%.
