Woodside strikes at Alaric, Woodside Petroleum Ltd.

Australia’s Woodside Petroleum has struck gas at the Alaric-1 exploration well in licence WA-434-P in the Greater Carnarvon basin off Western Australia.

The discovery will boost Woodside’s hopes of finding more gas to expand its flagship Pluto liquefied natural gas export project.

The Alaric-1 probe hit around 185 metres of gross gas over several zones within the Triassic target.

Woodside said that initial analysis of drilling fluids suggests the gas could be comparatively liquids rich, but further tests are needed to confirm this.

The well is now being deepened to ensure the full gas column is penetrated. Once drilling is complete, wireline logging will be carried out to recover gas samples and then the hole will be plugged and abandoned as planned.

Woodside holds 100% equity interest in WA-434-P.
