Chevron finds more offshore gas at Exmouth

Release Date: 2010-08-13

OIL giant Chevron is continuing to strengthen its gas supplies, announcing yesterday another discovery off the coast of Western Australia.
Chevron Asia Pacific exploration and production president Jim Blackwell said the Brederode-1 discovery, which followed last year's Kentish Knock discovery in the same area, extended the gas resources farther offshore, adding to a growing local gas portfolio.

The company said the natural gas discovery, in the Exmouth Plateau area of the Carnarvon Basin, was in Australia's premier hydrocarbon basin, where it was a leading lease holder.

The discovery is further evidence the Exmouth plateau is shaping up as a new frontier for gas exploration. "This discovery demonstrates our long-term commitment to developing Australia's world-class natural gas resources," Mr Blackwell said.

The well was drilled to a depth of 2750m and a net gas pay of about 15m was found.

"We are encouraged by the exploration success, which is further evidence of the natural gas potential in the Exmouth Plateau area and the frontier opportunities offshore northwest Australia," vice-chairman George Kirkland said.

The oil giant has also had exploration success at its Gorgon project, off Western Australia, and revealed earlier this month that it had found enough gas to build another liquefied natural gas production plant there.
