Transpetro, Superpesa and Banco do Brasil sign funding agreements for three additional ships of Promef, Transpetro

Release Date: 2010-07-14

This Wednesday, Transpetro and the Rio de Janeiro shipyard Superpesa signed the funding agreements for the construction of three bunker ships (ships for the transportation of fuel for vessels). The agreements, with a total value of R$ 110.58 million, are the first to be executed with Banco do Brasil (BB), under the Fleet Modernization and Expansion Program of Transpetro (Promef).

The bunker ships, to be built by Superpesa, can carry two types of cargo – fuel oil and diesel oil – and will have a storage capacity of 4 thousand cubic meters, that is, 4 million liters. The expectation is that the construction works for these ships of Promef II will generate 2,500 jobs, both direct and indirect. The construction of the first bunker ship in this series will begin later this year, and is scheduled for delivery in early 2012.

BB acts as the funding agent of the Merchant Marine Fund (FMM). During the construction phase, the FMM will cover 82% of the investment. The remainder of the funds will be disbursed by the shipyard (8%) and Transpetro (10%). After the delivery of the ship, the financed share will climb to 90% of the contract values.

The next funding agreements to be announced by Transpetro involve the construction of eight gas ships by the Promar shipyard, in Suape (PE), and the construction of five product ships (transportation of oil by-products) by Rio Nave, in the State of Rio de Janeiro.

Yesterday, Transpetro had already signed the funding agreements for an additional 7 oil tankers of Promef II, in this case with Estaleiro Atlântico Sul and BNDES (National Bank for Social and Economic Development). Out of the total of 49 ships of Promef (23 in the first phase and 26 in the second), 46 have already been contracted, with an investment of US$ 4.7 billion. The last three ships comprising the program are currently in the final bidding phase.
