Inviting all of Norway to blog, OLF
Release Date: 2009-05-13
Forty years ago, oil was discovered in the North Sea. The oil and gas industry wants to share a blog with each and every citizen of Norway. "We have taken good advantage of the opportunities we were given back then. We have shown responsibility, and we have made sure that Norway is now one of the best countries in the world to live in," says Kristin Bremer Nebben, OLF's director of communications and government relations. In 1969, the oil companies were on the verge of giving up. Not a single drop of oil had been found in the North Sea. The drilling rig Ocean Viking was going to drill one last well before being laid up. What was supposed to be a last-ditch well ended up changing the Norwegian society and the lives of every single one of us. "During 40 years of oil and gas in Norway, we have made good use of these opportunities and we have carefully managed these assets for the common good. The oil and gas industry wants everyone to share in this national celebration. That is why we are inviting all Norwegians to tell their own part of the oil story," says Bremer Nebben. At Christmas, OLF will publish a book telling the people's oil and gas history. Blog We have set up 4.7 million "blopps" ( personal blogs) on the website www.oljenorge40aar.no – one for every single Norwegian. By answering three simple questions, everyone can find their very own blopp. "On oljenorge40aar.no, we are giving people the chance to blog their own part of Norway's oil history. Every single Norwegian has reaped the benefits of prudent management of the assets below the seabed. For some it has meant good healthcare, for others, an interesting job," says Bremer Nebben. This year, the Government expects that the oil and gas industry will provide nearly NOK 1.2 billion to the public purse. Let's put this into perspective. This means enough money to fund the police and judicial system in less than nine days. Enough money to fund higher education in less than a month. And in just 12 days, enough money to pay the children's allowance to all the parents in Norway.
Inconceivable values
During 40 years of oil and gas activities, the petroleum sector has grown to be the country's most knowledge-based industry. Norway has developed from a country with little industrial activity into a global technological showcase. "Our common oil and gas history is the story of a small nation on the outskirts of Europe that has blossomed into an energy superpower, and a country whose people possesses knowledge that the rest of the world thirsts for," says Bremer Nebben. In addition, the oil and gas industry has contributed an inconceivable NOK 6000 billion to the Norwegian treasury since the beginning. "The fact that our natural assets below the seabed have secured our welfare state is the result of both wise decisions by our politicians through the years and, not least, an industry that has been able to capitalize on the opportunities that have presented themselves," says Bremer Nebben.
