With operations in more than 130 countries, Total engages in all aspects of the petroleum industry, including Upstream operations (oil and gas exploration, development and production, LNG) and Downstream operations (refining, marketing and the trading and shipping of crude oil and petroleum products).

Total has been active in Malaysia in the downstream (lubricants) and chemicals sectors for many years.
In upstream, Total E&P Malaysia has been present in the country since 2001, when it farmed into Block SKF offshore Sarawak with a 42.5 percent interest. Its partners are Hess (operator, 42.5 percent) and PETRONAS Carigali (15 percent). Today Total is involved in exploration activities in Malaysia as operator of two blocks offshore, in association with PETRONAS Carigali. The Contract covers Blocks PM303 & PM324, located offshore Peninsula Malaysia in 50 to 80 metres of water depth. The Production Sharing Contract was signed in May 2008 and Total E&P Malaysia will carry out exploration activities including seismic data acquisition, and the drilling of high-pressure/high-temperature exploration wells, over the next 6 years.
